Former Vanderbilt football defensive coordinator Bob Shoop is returning to the Commodores as a senior defensive analyst, the program announced in a release Friday.
Shoop was Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator under James Franklin from 2011-13. He’s also worked at Tennessee, Mississippi State and Penn State among others. In 2018 with the Bulldogs, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant coach.
The 2011-13 stretch was the most successful in the Commodores’ history and included three bowl trips and a nine-win season. Vanderbilt’s defense finished in the top 25 among FBS teams in total defense all three years, according to the release.
As an analyst, Shoop will not be able to take part in off-campus recruiting, however, he can coach on the field due to an NCAA rule change implemented in the summer of 2024 that also impacts the Commodores’ Jerry Kill. It is not immediately clear what Shoop’s primarily responsibilities will be.
After the 2023 season, coach Clark Lea, a former defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, took over the defensive playcalling.
