Is LSU football still planning to host a spring game in 2025?

Several college football teams are shifting their approach to spring ball. A few major programs announced the cancellation of their 2025 spring games despite spring practice proceeding as planned.

Nebraska, Texas, and USC have all axed the annual spring game or decided on an alternative format.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule cited concerns about tampering and the transfer portal. A nationally televised scrimmage gives other teams a chance to get a look at Nebraska’s players, Rhule argues.

For LSU football, the spring game is proceeding as planned. The 2025 National L Club Spring Game is slotted for April 12 in Tiger Stadium. It’s final of the 15 practices LSU is allowed to have in the spring.

Due to the transfer portal, roster turnover in the sport is at an all-time high. That makes the spring a critical time, but it also means some positions can be thinned out. Last spring, LSU made an effort to protect its running backs due to lack of depth at the position.

After signing the top ranked transfer portal class in the country and welcoming several blue-chip freshman to campus, LSU’s roster is in a better spot. That could allow Brian Kelly and the Tigers to have a more traditional spring practice.

Early April is usually a busy time for several LSU sports, so LSU’s spring game doesn’t draw as much attention in Baton Rouge. You won’t see LSU fans packing the stands to watch a scrimmage, but it’s still the only true look fans get at the team in the offseason.

LSU is set at quarterback with Garrett Nussmeier returning, but fans will be interested in several position battles on the offense line. The spring could reveal a lot when it comes to the group protecting Nussmeier.
