‘My family drives everything’: Why Travis Wray resigned as Eastern Greene football coach

Travis Wray is calling a timeout. How long it lasts is anyone’s guess.

The Eastern Greene football coach announced on social media Thursday afternoon that he is stepping down and that includes his teaching position. He noted that he might still find himself on a sideline again, even this fall, but in a limited capacity.

Wray and his wife have two boys, 9 and 5, and they are becoming more and more active in athletics. The time spent away from them that’s needed to be a head coach was something he decided he could no longer afford.

“It had been something I’d been talking to with close friends in the coaching world two weeks after the season ended,” Wray said. “I went back and forth on it, finally came to the conclusion I didn’t have the drive I’ve always had for 17 years, pumped up for that next season.

“It was nothing about the program, just myself. My oldest is playing travel baseball and my youngest is starting sports in the spring. So it was the timing. All coaches have it. Just something (former Eastern Greene coach Joey Paridaen) told me was a big regret of his was not going to watch one his twins as much as he wanted. I don’t my children to think I’m putting the team above them and I did my best not to.”

Being a head coach is a non-stop job, Wray noted. So is being a dad and a husband.

“My family drives everything,” Wray said. “They’re the reason why I came back to Eastern so I came to realize what’s best for myself and my family and also the Eastern Greene football program at this time.

“With our kids’ sports, we always said, ‘Divide and conquer’, and I wasn’t doing much conquering. She was doing all the running around and it never felt right…
