Petoskey’s Loper honored with MHSFCA Assistant Coach of the Year award in final season

PETOSKEY — Petoskey coach Mike Loper doesn’t care much for the spotlight.

So, you can imagine his surprise when he was called out of the stands and down to the court during halftime of the Petoskey boys basketball finale Thursday night.

Loper, along with everyone else in attendance, got word that the longtime assistant coach was named a Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year, one of just a select few around the state.

“I’m going to have to have a word with (Gary) Hice, Gavin (Fralick), (Petoskey Athletic Director) Joel Dohm and whoever else,” Loper joked afterward.

Dohm, along with Fralick, Petoskey’s defensive coordinator on the football field, presented the honor to Loper during halftime.

He’s spent more than 30 years coaching football, baseball and softball in head coaching and assistant coaching roles.

A players coach and one fellow coaches loved to be around just as much, former Petoskey head football coach Kerry VanOrman put Loper’s style best.

“He wasn’t a screamer or yeller,” VanOrman said. “He’s always so calm and always balanced our coaching staff out really well. He was always very positive with the kids. He never got over the point where he was upset and it rubbed the kids the wrong way. He had a really good way, when you’re going through something as a team, of speaking up and saying something to the kids or even the coaches.”
