Three-star wide receiver Chris Stewart, one of Texas’s class of 2026 commits, is set to take an official visit to Southern Methodist University on May 2, a move that could signal a potential flip in his recruiting process.
Stewart originally committed to the Texas Longhorns on June 25 but remains open to what SMU and other programs have to offer. The recruit has drawn interest from Tennessee, Alabama, Texas A&M, Michigan, Arizona State, Miami, Colorado and several others.
Both Texas and SMU earned spots in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff last season. The Mustangs, under head coach Rhett Lashlee, finished the 2024 campaign with an 11-3 record before a 38-10 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions in the first round, a performance that has helped build momentum heading into 2025.
Recruiting trends in Dallas appear to be shifting, with even former University of Texas president Jay Hartzell making the switch to SMU this May to lead as President.
Stewart’s visit comes as Texas prepares to travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face the Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30 for their first game of the season. The wide receiver attended camps for both Texas and Texas A&M over the summer before ultimately committing to the Longhorns.
