SEC teams ranked according to ESPN’s returning production

The 2025 season is going to be a big one for the Oklahoma Sooners. That’s why Brent Venables and the Sooners were aggressive in their offensive coordinator search and in the transfer portal to bring in quarterback John Mateer. They need to rebound from a 6-7 season.

Only time will tell if their portal and coaching decisions will pay off this year. But they added guys like Mateer, linebacker Kendall Daniels, defensive end Marvin Jones Jr., offensive tackle Derek Simmons, and wide receiver Javonnie Gibson to a group that is returning a lot of talent from last season. Though last year’s results on the offensive side of the ball don’t provide a ton of confidence in what Oklahoma’s bringing back, they played a lot of young players and that experience, both the good and the bad, will be invaluable to their development this offseason.

So how will that experience and the returners on both sides of the ball help Oklahoma in 2025? That experience matters for something. Like we saw last year, the lack of experience at quarterback, wide receiver, and along the offensive line really hurt the offense. Now the Sooners appear to have experience in spades.

Every year, ESPN’s Bill Connelly evaluates returning production for every roster in the FBS. Transfers only get credit for a percent of the snaps or production they bring with them from their former teams.

Here’s a look at how Connelly accounts for transfer production when factoring them into his formula

Percent of returning OL snaps: 40% of the overall number

Percent of returning WR/TE receiving yards: 35%

Percent of returning QB passing yards: 22%

Percent of returning RB rushing yards: 3%

Percent of returning snaps: 66%

Percent of returning tackles: 19%

Percent of returning tackles for loss: 15%
