The rise of the transfer portal has drastically changed the way college football programs construct their rosters.
For many programs, including Louisville football, it’s an annual undertaking of filling vacancies due to graduation or transfer and finding roles for each player. Many incoming transfers have only one year of eligibility remaining.
“We’re anticipating change every year now,” U of L coach Jeff Brohm said. “Once you start that cycle, you can maybe bring the numbers down a little bit, but it’s probably going to continue for a while. … From a coaching standpoint, you’ve just got to play with the rules that are put in front of you, make the most of it and try to piece this thing together and have the best team you can every year.”
After the Cardinals’ 9-4 season, they lost 14 starters (seven on both offense and defense). Seven (five on offense, two on defense) of the losses were first-year transfers with quarterback Tyler Shough and wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks being the biggest departures. Cataurus Hicks became a starter late in the season but was one of 20 players to transfer out of Louisville during the offseason.
But the Cardinals added 21 players from the transfer portal, many of whom will have an opportunity to become starters. The process of finding roles for the 2025 season begins with spring practices on Monday. The Cardinals will have six open practices before capping the spring with their annual spring game April 11.
Here’s the Cardinals’ projected depth chart ahead of spring football:

Wide receiver: Chris Bell; Antonio Meeks
