Despite the outcry from rival fans, Michigan football’s big turnaround in 2021 was less to do with Connor Stalions (who had been around the program in unofficial capacity for some time) and more about the culture changing. One of the biggest reasons why the culture changed was the player-led leadership with Aidan Hutchinson, Mike Sainristil, Josh Ross, and Cade McNamara taking ownership of the team, but it also had to do with the coaching staff not micromanaging everything.
And the reason for that? Former Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy head coach Biff Poggi.
Poggi became something of a consigliere to then-head coach Jim Harbaugh, and his counsel paid huge dividends — both for Michigan as well as for Poggi. He departed Ann Arbor for the Charlotte job, but didn’t last two full years there.
Upon his dismissal, he came to Ann Arbor for the home finale against Northwestern. And there were reports he would return to Michigan football full time, but only on Monday did it officially become a reality, with the Wolverines announcing his hire.
Poggi first got to be around the program when his son, Henry, was on the team (as a tight end, fullback and defensive lineman). 2021 marked his official hiring and he stayed in Ann Arbor for two years before taking the Charlotte job.
He returns to Ann Arbor as the associate head coach and will work closely with Sherrone Moore.
