Put Elon Musk and DOGE in charge of cleaning up wasteful excess in college sports

Let the Democrats and Republicans vehemently debate the merits of President Donald Trump putting the controversial Elon Musk in charge of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, but I am here today to reach across the aisle and present a non-partisan idea I think we all can agree upon.

Instead of putting Musk in charge of trimming the bureaucratic fat in Washington, let’s task him with taking a chainsaw to the bloated, sprawling industry of college athletics. Even more than the federal government, college sports for years has spent with reckless abandon, relying on outdated business models and ignoring efficiency in favor of the wasteful status quo.

It’s time to turn Musk and his minions loose to tackle the financial absurdity of college football, specifically, and college athletics in general. What better person than Musk, who is known for championing efficiency, to bring some fiscal responsibility to fat, waddling cash cow known as college football.

Musk could start with the most ridiculous waste of money in college sports — the exorbitant coaching contract buyouts whereby schools sign football coaches to 8-year contracts worth $10 million a year, only to fire the coaches two years later and shell out massive buyouts.

Musk could hold up Florida State as an example of this inane practice. In 2019, the Seminoles hired Willie Taggart to replace Jimbo Fisher and fired him after just 21 games and paid him a buyout close to $20 million. The Seminoles then hired Mike Norvell to replace Taggart and handed over an 8-year, $11-million-a-year extension after he posted consecutive winning seasons. The Seminoles then went 2-10 last season and, if they should want to fire Norvell if he has another bad season in 2025, it would cost them about $55 million in buyout money.
