Seth Littrell to join Tennessee staff under his former OU football teammate, Josh Heupel

NORMAN — Nearly 25 years after leading OU football to a national title as players, Seth Littrell and Josh Heupel are reuniting in Tennessee.

Heupel, the former Sooners quarterback and offensive coordinator turned Volunteers head coach, has hired Littrell to his offensive staff, per a report Tuesday by Volquest. Littrell, a former OU fullback, was fired after serving as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator for seven games last season.

“Seth is an all-time great Sooner,” OU head coach Brent Venables said following the firing. “He has a deep love for this university and football program, and has poured his heart and soul into both. Despite that, our performance as an offense this season has not at all lived up to the OU standard and I felt a change was necessary now.”

Littrell’s contract was set to pay him $1.1 million last season and ran through 2026 with $50,000 increases before the 2025 and 2026 seasons. OU’s offense ranked No. 129 nationally at the time of his firing.

Littrell served as an analyst on Venables’ staff in 2023 after he was fired as North Texas’ head coach following the 2022 season. Prior to his time with the Mean Green, Littrell was a respected playcaller at Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina.

Heupel, who was also a groomsman in Littrell’s wedding, holds a 37-15 record as Tennessee’s coach. The Volunteers beat the Sooners 25-15 last season in Norman last season.
