Roughly a quarter-century after pacing the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium sideline, Steve Spurrier is returning to the Gators staff.
The younger Steve Spurrier, that is.
The school confirmed Wednesday that Steve Spurrier Jr., whose work as a special teams and offensive assistant for his dad in the late 1990s launched an extensive college coaching career, is joining Billy Napier’s staff in a supportive role. Various reports indicate the younger Spurrier, 53, will serve as an analyst.
The elder Spurrier remains a UF athletic department ambassador.
A Duke alumnus, Spurrier Jr. spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator at Tulsa, which averaged more than 385 total yards both seasons but totaled only seven wins in that span. His nomadic career also has included stints at Mississippi State and Washington State (both with Mike Leach), Western Kentucky, South Carolina and Oklahoma.
He worked alongside his dad in various roles for the elder Spurrier’s entire decade-long tenure at South Carolina, and was receivers coach for Bob Stoops on the 2000 Oklahoma team that won a national title.
