Iowa football announces date for open spring practice

The Iowa Hawkeyes have not been a team that has played a traditional spring game in the past under head coach Kirk Ferentz. There are many reasons as to why they don’t, but that won’t stop them from opening up Kinnick Stadium for fans.

The Hawkeyes have announced their annual open spring practice to be held on Saturday, April 26. Fans will be allowed to attend the practice and get a glimpse of what the 2025 Iowa Hawkeyes may look like.

Like recent years, this event is much more of a glorified practice with very controlled environments and limited live action to protect players from injuries while still getting as many players reps as possible.

This will be the first chance to see what Iowa’s initial depth at running back looks like with the departure of Kaleb Johnson. It figures to be a duo of Kamari Moulton and Jaziun Patterson, as long as the two stay healthy during spring ball.

Brendan Sullivan will be getting the first team reps under center on offense as Mark Gronowski continues rehab from an offseason surgery. These reps could provide Sullivan the chance to stake his claim as Iowa’s backup quarterback if not push for the starting job. They should also help Iowa to continue utilizing Sullivan’s skillset in various packages.

On defense, Iowa will be led by a new linebacker group after the departures of Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson. How Phil Parker handles this in spring ball could provide some clues into what the plan is for next fall.
