Michigan football adds WR coach who led 3 All-Americans in Ann Arbor under Lloyd Carr

A familiar face is coming back to Ann Arbor to help out with wide receivers.

The day after Michigan football brought Biff Poggi back from Charlotte to resume his post as associate head coach, Erik Campbell was announced as assistant receivers coach.

A former wideout and safety during his playing days at Michigan (1984-87) when he was teammates with former head coach Jim Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel, Campbell spent the past six years at Bowling Green.

Campbell, 59, previously coached wideouts (1995-2007) for a dozen seasons under Lloyd Carr, where he established a trio of All-Americans in David Terrell, Marquise Walker and Braylon Edwards.

Between his time at U-M and Bowling Green, Campbell worked at Iowa (2008-12) and with the Montreal Alouettes (2013-14) in the Canadian Football League before he re-joined Harbaugh’s staff when he arrived in Ann Arbor (2015) as recruiting coordinator.

Ron Bellamy has coached wide receivers at his alma mater since 2021, but the 2024 season was perhaps the worst for the position in modern history at U-M. Nobody in the room had even 250 yards through the air, with Tyler Morris leading the way at 23 receptions for 248 yards and two scores.

Next was Semaj Morgan, who caught 27 passes, but only managed 139 yards (5.1 per reception) and one score. Fred Moore had 128 yards and Peyton O’Leary had 102 and those were the four leaders in the room, who combined for 71 catches for 617 yards and six scores.

For perspective: There were 20 wide receivers in the Big Ten who had at lest 617 yards by themselves, six who had more yards than 71 receptions and 11 who had at least six touchdowns on the season.

U-M also announced the rest of its coaching staff who are not the 10 on field…
