Quinn Ewers injury: Texas football QB played through oblique tear in 2024 season

Texas football quarterback Quinn Ewers began the 2024 season as a Heisman Trophy candidate before falling off and entering the NFL draft. However, there may be a reason why Ewers didn’t quite live up to the preseason hype.

It’s been reported by multiple outlets that the oblique strain Ewers suffered against UTSA was actually a tear that occurred during Texas’ win over Michigan. The quarterback never fully recovered from the injury, despite returning against Oklahoma after a two-game absence.

Ewers showed no signs of the injury against Michigan, throwing for 246 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-36 passing. He exited halfway through Texas’ game against UTSA after the quarterback completed a pass to tight end Gunnar Helm, being replaced by backup Arch Manning.

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers (3) drops back to throw against the Vanderbilt Commodores during the first half Oct. 26, 2024 at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville.

In mid-November, Ewers said he was still feeling the oblique injury but dismissed it as not “a big concern.”

“Nobody’s 100%,” Ewers said. “Especially this late in the season. But that’s part of it. I feel good.”

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian asked Ewers to throw short or behind the line of scrimmage 60% of the time in the 2024 college football season according to Pro Football Focus. Some of that can be attributed to the offensive scheme but the news about Ewers’ oblique provides some context as to why he threw deep passes only 12.4% of the time.

Now fully healthy, Ewers will be throwing at the NFL combine in an attempt to show off the arm talent which led him to be rated as the No. 1 quarterback in the nation coming out of Southlake Carroll High School.
