Texas A&M’s 2025 football season will be under the national microscope for most of the offseason, mainly centered around coach Mike Elko entering his second year at the helm after finishing last season 1-4 with consecutive losses to Texas A&M USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, culminating in an average 8-5 record.
On its face, Elko deserves some grace for having to deal with several critical injuries in the backfield, starting with losing former five-star running back Rueben Owens before the season, followed by RB Le’Veon Moss’s season-ending lower body injury after the Aggie’s impressive 7-1 start, including an undefeated record in SEC play.
While blaming running back injuries for the end of season collapse is laughable to most, OC Collin Klein’s scheme requires immense depth and talent in the backfield, which completely evaporated after both players were lost for the year.
However, starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who permanently took over for current Houston QB Conner Weigman, will continue to take any future blame for the offense’s performance. Still, Reed won’t have any excuses, as Elko added several wide receivers from the transfer portal while the entire starting offensive line will return.
On Monday, ESPN’s Bill Connelly unveiled his 2025 Returning Production Rankings, and, as expected, the Aggies ranked No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 in the SEC. Going by the offensive line and running back room, Texas A&M is ranked 19th on offense and 12th on defense, headlined by substantial returning talent in the secondary.
While this ranking looks impressive, this is not indicative of success, as the Aggies led the SEC in returning production during the 2023 and 2024 preseasons, ending with a combined 15-11 record, mainly due to losing key starters on both sides of the ball.
