It’s NFL combine time, and once again, Central Florida will be well represented with five NFL prospects testing their abilities among more than 300 other athletes looking to enhance their April draft status.
Leading the way for the Orlando area are two big-time stars in UCF running back RJ Harvey and Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman. Two other former Central Florida stars who have been invited to the annual testing event in Indianapolis are Colorado receiver Jimmy Horn and Nebraska safety Tommi Hill.
Harvey had an impressive collegiate career for the Knights and his story is quite unique. He signed, out of Edgewater High, with Virginia as a quarterback prospect. Numerous schools wanted Harvey as a college running back, but Virginia took him as a quarterback, which was his early choice.
After arriving at Virginia, however, Harvey wasn’t comfortable and missed his home environment. UCF had always wanted Harvey to stay home and be a running back, so he finally took former coach Josh Heupel up on his offer and came back home.
The rest is in the UCF record books. In three seasons, Harvey, who is coming out early although he has his COVID year remaining, ran for 3,792 yards and 43 touchdowns, and averaged 6.3 yards per carry. He was first team All-Big 12 this past season.
At 5-foot-7, 207 pounds, he is considered a bit under-sized for the NFL, but he’s proved to be able to carry a heavy workload and definitely can take a licking. He’s also very agile and has proven his ability to distance himself at the second level. A low 40-yard dash time will enhance his draft status immensely.
Stutsman, 6-4. 243. is another interesting story. He comes out of little Foundation Academy in Winter Garden, where the student enrollment for the private K-through-12 school is about 1,200. He was a star at Foundation, playing every…
