Nebraska football associate head coach Phil Snow indicated that he will have a multifaceted role as a member of Matt Rhule’s coaching staff, including helping the Huskers’ new defensive coordinator. He made that clear during his press conference on Wednesday.
Defensive coordinator John Butler was appointed to the position in January and coached The Blackshirts in their victory over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl. Snow came to Nebraska in November and was initially hired as a consultant before assuming the associate head coach role. He has previous experience with coach Matt Rhule, having worked with him at Temple, Baylor, and the Carolina Panthers.
Snow has experience on the defensive side of the football, having begun his career as a defensive coordinator at Arizona State in 1988. He was also the defensive coordinator at UCLA from 1995-1998 and served the same roles at Temple and Baylor.
Now, it sounds like he will have a hand in helping defensive coordinator Jon Butler, as transcribed by Husker247’s Brian Christopherson. Snow also made it clear that it’s Butler’s defense, and he’ll be working for him.
“Coach Butler will call the defense but I will be involved in the game plan… It’s a collaborative thing, right? We all work together. But it will be Coach Butler’s defense and we’re all working for him in that room.
Butler already gives the Nebraska football defense a strong base. Snow’s input has a chance to be extremely valuable. It will be interesting to see what the two coaches can come up with as part of a collaborative effort.
