NFL Scouting Combine: Travis Hunter wants to play both ways. But what do the Browns think?

INDIANAPOLIS — The star of Thursday’s media availability at the NFL Scouting Combine was Colorado Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. More than 100 media members crowded around his podium to hear the wide receiver/cornerback talk for the first time at the combine.

Hunter played more than 100 snaps a game playing both sides of the football full-time with the Buffaloes. He was asked multiple times about his preference for position in the NFL, and made it clear he would like to keep doing so.

Asked which side of the ball he wants to play, Hunter said repeatedly, “Both ways.” Asked how much, he said, “100%.”

However, Hunter did add that “it’s up to the organization” to determine which side he plays more. Asked how he would play a way to use him both ways, he said, “That’s up to them to figure it out.”

The Browns pick at No. 2 overall in April’s draft. Most of the conversation around Cleveland has centered on a quarterback, including Hunter’s teammate, Shedeur Sanders.

Both general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski were asked directly about Hunter and his unique skillset during their availabilities at the combine this week. Berry, who called Hunter a “unicorn,” said he saw him as a wide receiver at the next level.

“I mean, honestly, I would say this, it’s six one way, half dozen another,” Berry said. “He can play both. I do think that there’s just an element where his superpower, his superpower, they’re really his ball skills and that’s a position where you can use it 100 times during the season versus maybe 30 on the high end. But look, we’ll have our coaches and scouts fight it out in terms of where he should be on the board, but any team he goes to would be happy to have him.”
