You might be surprised where Wisconsin football lands on ESPN’s early 2025 SP+ rankings

Another important milestone of the college football offseason passed on Thursday: ESPN’s Bill Connelly released his updated SP+ rankings for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

The metric merges each team’s returning production, recent recruiting and transfer portal performance, and program history to forecast the upcoming year’s results. It leads the pack of predictive rating systems, and gives us a first legitimate look at sport-wide power rankings for the upcoming season. For reference, Connelly always adds this disclaimer when it comes to the metric:

A reminder on SP+: It’s a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking, and, along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at the end of the year. These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information we have been able to gather to date.

Wisconsin’s SP+ ranking through 2025 could look a lot better than its record. After a poor 5-7 finish to the 2024 campaign, the Badgers expect to improve on both sides of the football. However, they will face one of the toughest schedules in the sport and easily the toughest in the Big Ten. That means two things can be true: Wisconsin may rise to be one of the 30 best teams in the country, though it is still likely to struggle to reach bowl eligibility.

That is all projection. Much is still to change between now and when the season kicks off in late August. Each team will hold its spring practice period, further bolster its roster in the spring transfer window and make final season preparations through the summer.
