Bill Belichick, UNC football program trying to poach Penn State verbal commits

If you thought Bill Belichick was done adding student-athletes to the UNC football roster and recruiting board, might we suggest you think again.

Not only is Belichick trying to solidify his first roster in Year One as the Tar Heels’ head football coach, but he’s also trying to get an early idea of his future rosters. Some of Belichick’s greatest adds include 4-star cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, whom Belichick nabbed in the transfer portal, plus getting 4-star quarterback Bryce Baker to re-affirm his North Carolina commitment and – later – sign his National Letter of Intent.

Part of Belichick’s recruiting efforts involve trying to flip commitments from other college football programs, such as ones with plentiful recent success like 2024 College Football Player member Penn State.

On Wednesday, February 26, Nittany Sports Now reported that Belichick offered two Class of 2026 wide receivers: 4-star Jahsiear Rogers (Middletown, DE) and 3-star wide receiver Lavar Keys (Hyattsville, MD), both of whom are verbally committed to Penn State.

Both Rogers and Keys have plenty of time to make decisions on their futures, but there’s no doubt both would be major boosts to UNC’s 2026 recruiting class, which the Tar Heels currently have seven commitments in. Rogers would be North Carolina’s first 4-star, while Keys would be the first wide receiver.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings on his recruiting profile, Rogers is Delaware’s top-ranked player in the Class of 2026. In those same rankings on Keys’ recruiting profile, Keys is the 11th-ranked player in Maryland.

Many wondered how Belichick would do recruiting in his first season as a college football head coach, given the grumpy aura he showcased roaming the NFL sidelines for 20+ years. Belichick is quickly shaping up to be a strong recruiter – and UNC is extremely lucky…
