Cape Henlopen has hired Chip Knapp, the longtime Wesley College coach, as its next football head coach.
Knapp, who last coached at Dover High School from 2021-23, replaces Mike Frederick, the former NFL player who stepped away from Cape Henlopen in late January.
Knapp spent the fall away from football for the first time in more than three decades. He said his life got “much quieter.”
“I got to see what life is like outside of football, I guess,” Knapp said. “It was good, and I did miss football. It was nice to have some different stress level in your life, but I’ve coached football for 35 years or so. It’s what I do.”

Knapp, 60, joined the Wesley coaching staff in 1989 and served as offensive coordinator under longtime head coach Mike Drass for a run of 13 straight NCAA playoff appearances (2005-17). He became head coach after Drass’ sudden death in 2018 and led Wesley to a 19-7 record in two-plus seasons.
He took over Dover High’s program in May 2021 after the conclusion of Wesley’s final season. Dover had hired another coach two months earlier who wound up changing his mind, reopening Dover’s search at the right time for Knapp.
His connection with Cape Henlopen also involved a degree of serendipity. Last summer, Knapp bought a second home in Lewes, never thinking it would set him up for his next coaching job. Eventually, he learned from Frederick, who had become a friend through coaching, that he intended to leave.
