Electra names longtime Tascosa OC Joshua Ritchey as its new head football coach

Joshua Ritchey has been waiting for the right time to chase his first head football coaching job.

Not just for him, but also his family.

That time has finally come for the longtime Amarillo Tascosa offensive coordinator, and it’s bringing him closer to his hometown in the process.

Ritchey was confirmed as Electra’s new head football coach and athletic director during a school board meeting Thursday.

“Before my son got into high school, I interviewed for a head coaching job and didn’t get it. I then decided that for the next six years, I’d let my kids get through high school before trying again,” the 46-year-old Ritchey said. “I started looking last year and didn’t have success. When I saw Electra come open, I thought it could be a great fit.”

A great fit because it brings Ritchey and his wife, Brittany, closer to their hometown of Vernon. Ritchey is a 1997 grad of Vernon where he played wingback and free safety for coach Bill Blythe.

And because he grew up in the area, he has a grasp on the tradition at Electra.

“I know they’ve got some tradition. Coach (Mark) Bateman was there when I was in school at Vernon, and he had some real successful teams,” said Ritchey, whose parents and in-laws still live in Vernon. “They have a tradition of winning, and they are coming off a strong year. I’m excited to get down there to see if we can’t build on it some more.”

Ritchey has spent nearly his entire 24-year coaching career as an assistant under Tascosa head coach Ken Plunk, including the past 16 as the Rebels’ offensive coordinator. During that time, Tascosa has built the reputation of featuring the state’s preeminent flexbone offense.
