LSU football and Brian Kelly are once again looking for a new defensive line coach.
After one year at LSU, defensive line coach Bo Davis is moving on to take the same job with the New Orleans Saints. Davis was widely regarded as one of the top position coaches and recruiters in the country.
Davis did good work for LSU in 2024. Ahmad Breaux and Dominick McKinley were ready to play as freshmen. Transfer defensive tackles Jay’Viar Suggs and Gio Paz both had career years, too.
Davis is gone, but LSU remains talented at defensive tackle. Breaux and McKinley are set to return. Veteran Jacobian Guillory returns after missing the bulk of 2024 with an Achilles injury.
Assuming the room stays in-tact, the new coach will have a lot to work with. Today, we’ll look at some potential candidates to fill the position. Some of these guys have ties to Kelly while others are rising names in the coaching industry.
Gerald Chatman, Florida
As far as resume and fit goes, it’s hard to find a better name than Chatman. He has experience across the SEC and worked in the NFL. He’s familiar with Louisiana after two separate stints at LSU and serving as Tulane’s defensive line coach in 2023.
Last December, Chatman joined Billy Napier’s staff at Florida and just finished his first year with the program. The Gators’ defensive line finished the season strong under Chatman.
Chatman has worked with Kelly before, working as LSU’s interim defensive line coach in the spring of 2023. There was talk of Chatman being promoted to the full-time role then, but LSU opted to hire Jimmy Lindsay.
Now that he’s proven at Florida, Chatman is certain to get a look at LSU.
