Georgia hires TCU assistant to defensive staff

The Georgia Bulldogs added to their defensive coaching staff, hiring TCU assistant linebacker coach Garrett Cox. Cox’s role is unknown in the Georgia organization, but he’s likely to contribute to the UGA defense.

Cox has some experience coaching in the SEC. After his time as a student assistant at Georgia in 2006 (where he was with a younger Kirby Smart), he got his start at coaching at Georgia Southern. Afterwards, he had pit stops with Texas Southern, Michigan, Tennessee, and Alabama before taking the job at Texas Christian.

With Alabama, he worked with Georgia assistant coaches Dan Lanning and Glenn Schumann on the staff. Lanning is currently coaching the Oregon Ducks.

Currently, the Bulldogs have Schumann as inside linebackers coach, along with Chidera Uzo-Diribe as the outside linebackers coach, so it still remains to be seen what position Cox will take with the defensive staff.

Hiring Cox isn’t the only change the Bulldogs have made to their coaching staff. The Bulldogs recently promoted Andrew Thacker from defensive analyst to the nickel/star coach.
