New Mexico football player wins 60-meter dash prelims at MW Indoor Championships

Feb. 28—New Mexico cornerback Cam Watts ran a 6.68-second 60-meter dash at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships to win the prelims outright and advance to Saturday’s final.

UNM track and field coach Darren Gauson said Watts has been with the program for roughly a week after running unattached in a few indoor events this season.

“(He) did really, really well and then we talked to the football coaches,” he added, “(and) they were happy for him to come out … We’re really excited to have Cam with us.”

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound former Texas Tech transfer made 20 total tackles over nine games with the Lobos last season. Watts previously ran track at Union High School in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma but had no college experience until this season.

The men’s 60 final is scheduled for 11:40 a.m. Saturday.
