Who will emerge as Notre Dame football’s starting QB in 2025? Ex-teammates weigh in at Combine

INDIANAPOLIS — For the first time in three years, Notre Dame football will conduct a true quarterback competition this spring and beyond.

Whether it’s Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey or CJ Carr who emerges as Riley Leonard’s successor ahead of Labor Day weekend in Miami, former teammates at the NFL Scouting Combine this week see nothing but upside.

“Dudes like that, man, those are all ballers,” wide receiver Beaux Collins said Friday morning. “It’s going to be a tough decision for the coaches up there at Notre Dame to see who starts the season off. This spring they’re going to battle their tails off and try to prove who deserves it for sure.”

Collins, who spent one season in South Bend as a grad transfer from Clemson, wasn’t about to pick a favorite.

“We’d have throwing sessions in the summer, and they’d be in a rotation,” Collins said. “I loved every single one of them. They all have a specific thing about their game that sets them apart from each other. It’s amazing to see. …  I just can’t wait to see who steps out on the field.”

Former Irish tight end Mitchell Evans, who missed Angeli’s 2023 Sun Bowl victory over Oregon State due to an ACL injury, suggested a wide-open battle as well.

“The Notre Dame quarterback room is in good hands,” Evans said. “Whoever is going to be the guy next year, going into the fall, the team is going to be good.”

It certainly helps that Heisman Trophy candidate Jeremiyah Love returns in the backfield along with Jadarian Price and third-down weapon Aneyas Williams.
