LSU football defensive line coach target turns down Tigers, remains with rival

LSU football’s search for a new defensive line coach will continue. According to a report from Bruce Feldman, Florida’s Gerald Chatman is opting to remain with the Gators.

When it was reported that LSU’s previous defensive line coach Bo Davis was leaving for the New Orleans Saints, Chatman was immediately considered a candidate. Chatman’s ties to Louisiana college football run deep. He was an analyst at LSU under Ed Orgeron in 2021 before joining Colorado’s staff in 2022.

Chatman returned to LSU in the spring of 2023 as an analyst, but served as the interim defensive line coach in the spring. Shortly after, Chatman was named defensive line coach at Tulane. That led Chatman to his current position with the Gators.

Chatman’s connections to LSU and Brian Kelly made Chatman a strong candidate for the job. In 2021, LSU’s front seven made big strides with Chatman contributing on the coaching staff.

Chatman did good work with Florida in 2024.

If Chatman made the jump, it would be his sixth stop in as many falls. His choice to remain in Gainesville allows Chatman to establish some continuity.

Along with his collegiate experience, Chatman made a stop in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals.

LSU will shift its focus to other candidates. Davis is a big loss and he was one of the most important members of the LSU coaching staff.
