Caleb Downs agrees with bold claim about Ohio State football’s championship run

Caleb Downs joined Ohio State football, in part, to win a national championship. That he did, and Downs played a huge part in the Buckeyes’ success this season. Ohio State, up until a battle with Michigan to end the regular season, looked like the best team in college football, having only a one-point loss on its resume up until that home defeat.

Still a top-10 team, in the expanded College Football Playoff, they made the cut but missed having a first-round bye. That said, that loss arguably sparked the greatest run of performances in college football history. The Buckeyes took down a strong SEC side in Tennessee then throttled Oregon and followed that up by beating Texas.

Earning a national championship battle with Notre Dame, the Buckeyes’ success story continued. They won it all, and Downs doesn’t think his interviewer is crazy to say it is the best run in college football history. Here’s how he phrased his response.

“You’re right. I would say the story of this team has to be told. The run that we went on, I haven’t seen a run like it. It was an honor to be a part of. … Those two losses were both turning points for us during the season. They helped the team grow and get to where we were at the end of the season. Losing to the Team up North is one of the reasons that we actually won it,” Downs said via 247Sports’ Grant Hughes.

Here’s the full interview with the defensive back.

Downs, who started his career at Alabama and transferred to Ohio State ahead of this past season, ended with 82 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 6 passes defended. He also snagged 0.5 sacks as well to wrap up what was a terrific season. His leadership was also consistently on display.

With at least one more season in college, Downs is expected to be a first-round pick when he is able to declare for the draft. Let’s hope he has another run for Ohio…
