As Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer enters his second spring practice at UA, his challenges are largely the same as they were in his 9-4 debut season.
The tools at his disposal to improve on that record, however, aren’t at all the same.
It’s a spring of change, to be sure, and with adjustments to the Alabama coaching staff, DeBoer put some of it in motion himself. Things, of course, had to change. There’s a mandate for it. No program with stature and expectations in place like the Crimson Tide endures its worst season in almost two decades without a shake-up. And if there is any truth to the axiom that insanity is defined by expecting different results from the status quo, DeBoer can’t afford to go crazy.

By far, the change that will capture the attention of the Alabama fan base is the unique dynamic between DeBoer, new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, co-offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan and a quarterback room that doesn’t have a single college start to its credit. The chain of command there is nothing if not unorthodox. Grubb, who served as DeBoer’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State and Washington, has re-joined the head coach to call plays but not coach quarterbacks. Sheridan, Alabama’s play caller last year, returns to coach quarterbacks but not call plays. And the most experienced passer on the roster, Ty Simpson, enters his fourth year in the program working under his fourth different primary offensive coordinator.
Good thing he’s a coach’s son.
