After a big weekend in the Las Vegas Classic, that included a 3-0 record with wins over Washington, Illinois and Texas Tech, the Texas Longhorns baseball team has jumped five spots in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Horns are now No. 9 in the nation and boast a 9-1 record. UT is unbeaten since dropping the season opener to Louisville 4-3 in extra innings.
The blowout win of the Red Raiders was satisfying for Texas after Tech catcher Dylan Maxcey fired a few shots at the Longhorns before the event. “I think all of us are super excited,” he told reporters this week. “We’re going to be kind of with the mentality that if we don’t run-rule them, then we lost.”
Instead, it was the Red Raiders that flirted with the wrong side of the run rule. The Horns crushed Tech 10-5. Texas also edged the Huskies 10-9 and had a 15-6 come-from-behind win over Illinois.
The top three teams in the nation come from the SEC. Tennessee, LSU and Arkansas are joined in the ranking by Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Auburn and of course Texas. The Aggies fell nine spots in the poll after a horrific 0-4 week.
