Illinois football has dipped into the NFL to bolster its coaching staff.
Joe Kim, who has over 30 years of NFL coaching experience, has been named the newest Fighting Illini football skill development coordinator, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema announced Monday morning. Kim spent the last six seasons as the director of skill development for the New England Patriots.
“I am very excited to have Joe Kim join our staff here at Illinois,” Bielema said in a release. “With Joe, we are bringing in a source of information and a skill set that is unique to all of college football. When speaking with some of the most elite NFL players that have worked with Joe, it is immediately clear the impact and daily influence his teachings have on their foundation of skills, leading them to become the best versions of themselves.

“Joe transcends high-level players of all positions by relying on the basic skills and fundamentals of great football plays. He will make an immediate impact on everyone in our building on and off the field.”

Hall of fame coach Nick Saban nicknamed Kim “the pass-rush guru” as he uses martial art-type moves and inserts them into the game of football. This is Kim’s second foray into college football, working previously as a pass rush consultant for Penn State in 2009 and 2010.
He’s been a part of 11 NFL teams including winning Super Bowl LIII with Bielema and the Patriots in 2019.
