LAWRENCE — The future of college football spring games has become a hot topic of conversation nationally, as Kansas football opened spring ball on Sunday.
Talking points include the length of seasons for teams making postseason runs and how spring games provide scouting opportunities for other programs hoping to pry away players via a transfer. A recent ESPN report the reasons Texas, Nebraska and other programs have canceled spring games.
Kansas will hold what it describes as a spring showcase that is open to the public. On Sunday, following his first spring practice, Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold reacted to the national conversation on spring games.

“It seems to be where it’s going,” Leipold said. “We haven’t done a ton, we’ve done pretty much our same scrimmage format as we’ve done since we’ve been here — and really since I’ve been a head coach in spring ball. Right now, we plan to trend that way. I don’t see us increasing that. And I do see — it appears they could be fading away for various reasons.”
Leipold continued: “I think that the next thing that we have to look out is the roster limits that we’re going to be under. Our numbers are going to different, and you’re going to be depleted in some spots some years — either through injury, through guys from offseason, maybe, surgeries, or graduation, or attrition. It’s going to make it more and more difficult to actually hold those games.”
Asked about the possibility of having fewer walk-ons in the future, Leipold acknowledged it’s been interesting. At the moment, Kansas is still hovering around 100 players on the roster — which Leipold likes. But there were conversations after last…
