Longhorns hire former West Virginia head coach

The Longhorns continued to add to their coaching staff on Tuesday, hiring former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown. He recently led the Mountaineers to a 6-6 record last year before he was let go. They had better success during the 2023 campaign, going 9-4 and beating North Carolina in the Mayo Bowl.

While Brown’s time with West Virginia came to a disappointing end, his tenure was full of memorable moments. He finished his Mountaineers career with a 37-35 record. It is unknown what role Brown would fill on Steve Sarkisian’s staff, but his experience would be a valuable addition.

As the Longhorns look to end their championship drought, Brown would be the latest to join a staff that has undergone a lot of turnover in the last few weeks. The departures include Blake Gideon, Terry Joseph, and Tashard Choice.

Although Brown has never coached at Texas, he has some ties to the program. He played with Chad Scott, the Longhorn’s new running back coach at Kentucky. They also worked together at Troy, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. Now, it seems like they will reunite in Texas.

During his coaching career, Brown’s teams have been known for running the football and playing defense. While that won’t be the case with the Longhorns due a star quarterback in Arch Manning, defense was a surprising strength last year. That should be the case during the 2025 campaign with Brown on the staff.

At one of the biggest programs in the country, Brown will get to show West Virginia what they are missing out on.
