Oklahoma Sooners 2024 freshman class receives high marks from CBS Sports

There weren’t many bright spots from the 2024 season for the Oklahoma Sooners, who finished 6-7 for the second time in three seasons. But one of the more encouraging storylines that emerged was the performance of members of the 2024 recruiting class. Headlined by five-star defensive tackle David Stone, it was other players from the class that stood out and played significant roles for the Sooners last season.

When evaluating every freshman class in the SEC, CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer gave the Oklahoma Sooners’ true freshman class a B+ for 2024.

The Sooners landed a pair of players on the 247Sports True Freshman All-American Team in Jackson and Bowen. Jackson earned a starting role from the jump, finishing with 28 tackles, three TFLs and two sacks. He played the fourth-most snaps of any true freshman DT this season. Bowen ended the year as Oklahoma’s top cornerback, holding opposing passers to a 55.3 CMP%. – Hummer, CBS Sports

The Oklahoma Sooners received big-time contributions from Jayden Jackson and Eli Bowen. Jackson was a force in the middle, eating up blockers to allow the linebackers to roam free and he improved as a pass rusher throughout the season. He’ll be expected to play a big-time role once again in 2025, especially after the departure of fellow defensive tackle Da’Jon Terry.

Bowen made a key interception in the third quarter of Oklahoma’s win over Alabama, displaying really good instincts and ball skills to jump a screen pass by Jalen Milroe. Though he wasn’t a starter to open the season, it didn’t take long for Bowen to become one of Oklahoma’s better options at cornerback. Sure, there were some growing pains at times, but he was one of the bright spots from the 2024 season.
