College football Big 12 rankings 2025: ASU, without Skattebo, at top; Arizona far back

During a stellar first season in the Big 12, Arizona State football shocked the conference with its underdog storyline.

According to one site, ASU won’t be underdogs for next season.

Athlon Sports has released its 2025 Big 12 college football rankings for the 16 teams in the conference.

The defending Big 12 champions top the list ahead of spring practices, but other teams could challenge for the conference title.

Steven Lassan wrote: “The Sun Devils are a team on the rise after last year’s Big 12 Championship. Running back Cam Skattebo will be missed, but quarterback Sam Leavitt is among the best in college football.”

Leavitt previously topped the site’s list of top returning Big 12 quarterbacks ahead of the spring season. It was a big honor, considering that eight of the conference’s top 10 statistical quarterbacks from last season are returning. Not to mention, a few teams are upgrading through the transfer portal.

Lassan wrote: “Leavitt was one of the Big 12’s top breakout stars from ‘24. In his first season after transferring in from Michigan State, Leavitt guided Arizona State to a Big 12 title by throwing for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns and added another 443 yards and five scores on the ground. With running back Cam Skattebo off to the next level, the Sun Devils will lean even more on Leavitt in ‘25.”

Following ASU at No. 2 is Kansas State. The Wildcats finished eighth in the conference last season with a 5-4 record.

Lassan wrote: “Quarterback Avery Johnson should be even better in his second year as the starter. Coach Chris Klieman’s team has a few holes to plug along the offensive line and on defense.”
