NORMAN — OU football begins spring football Thursday ahead of a crucial season for Brent Venables and the Sooners.
OU has a new offensive coordinator and quarterback, Venables is now explicitly calling the shots on defense, and the Sooners are replacing the stalwarts that helped the defense turn things around.
The Sooners are doing that coming off their second losing season in three seasons under Venables.
Here’s a look at the five biggest questions for the Sooners heading into spring football:
What will Ben Arbuckle’s offense look like?
New OU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle stands on the sidelines during the Armed Forces Bowl against Navy on Dec. 27 in Fort Worth, Texas.
We won’t know the complete answer to this question until the season kicks off on Aug. 30, especially since OU decided to do away with its annual spring game.
However, the spring should give us our first look at what new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle’s offense with John Mateer looks like. At Washington State, Arbuckle was known for his high-flying aerial attack.
The Cougars ranked 16th nationally in passing offense last season and it will be interesting to see how Mateer meshes with receivers Deion Burks and Jayden Gibson.
How Arbuckle utilizes the ground game, which schemes he runs and how he’ll adapt to the Sooners’ offensive line might give us some clues this spring.

Will a tight end separate from the pack?
It’s no secret the Sooners haven’t had success with tight ends in recent seasons. We graded the tight end position as an F in our 2024 grades.
For the second consecutive offseason, OU rebuilt at the position with transfers Will Huggins, Carson Kent and John Locke. Would the Sooners take another crack at looking for someone who can contribute in the spring portal?
