Check out Michigan State football’s history playing in Detroit

Michigan State football announced on Wednesday that the team will be heading to Ford Field in Detroit to conclude their 2025 regular season against the Maryland Terrapins. This will be a similar setup to the Spartans game against Penn State in 2023.

The game in Detroit is a part of the ongoing effort by the Spartans administration to integrate the Spartans into Detroit more. Both the basketball and hockey programs have been mainstays in Detroit, playing yearly games in the city, and the football program is going down a similar path.

Some fans do not like it, but most other fans are 100% for the idea, seeing the benefits that going to Detroit would provide the program.

With new history being made for the Spartans in Detroit in 2025, let’s revisit the Spartans history in the city:

1984 Cherry Bowl

Michigan State made the 1984 Cherry Bowl, their first bowl game in 18 years, and got the honor of playing Army in their program’s first ever bowl game. The Black Knights got the best of the Spartans in 1984, 10-6.

2010 vs Florida Atlantic

In 2010, a game between Michigan State and the Owls of Florida Atlantic was moved to Ford Field die to the Owls new stadium not yet being completed. In the game, MSU was led by Kirk Cousins and Edwin Baker, defeating FAU, 30-17.

2023 vs Penn State

Spearheading what will happen in 2025, the Spartans concluded their 2023 regular season against Penn State inside of Ford Field. Mercifully it put an end to the 2023 season, losing 42-0.

Overall
