Georgia football OC Mike Bobo: Offseason drama, a contract extension with pay hike and his health

Kirby Smart hasn’t held court to talk about his Georgia football team since leaving the postgame press conference in New Orleans after a Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame on Jan. 2.

So the Bulldogs’ coach never weighed in on the speculation and hot takes about his offensive coordinator, Mike Bobo since the season ended.

When former Georgia quarterback Buck Belue reported on Atlanta’s 680 The Fan in mid-January that Bobo would resign the following week due to health reasons, the days passed by with no movement.

A couple of weeks ago, it was the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum who lit up Bobo on the same radio station, saying in an appearance on ‘Cellini and DiMino’ that he could find a better offensive coordinator walking down a street in Atlanta.

Spring football starts Tuesday and Bobo remains Georgia’s offensive coordinator, entering his third season in his second stint in that role.

In fact, Bobo is under contract for two more seasons after signing a one-year contract extension before last season after he was named a finalist for the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant. His deal, which was not previously reported, now goes through the 2026 season, according to a copy obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald in an open records request.

Bobo’s salary of $1.403 million goes up to $1.503 million on July 1, 2025 and to $1.603 million on July 1, 2026.

While talking about Carson Beck’s 2024 season and Gunner Stockton stepping in as starter after the now former Georgia quarterback’s injury, Finebaum said on Feb. 18: “I frankly believe Georgia’s problem is at the offensive coordinator’s position. I think Kirby Smart, as great as I believe he is and I know you guys agree, is being way too loyal to Mike Bobo. I would get rid of Bobo today.
