Oregon coach Dan Lanning is sticking around in Eugene for the long haul.
On Thursday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Lanning has agreed to a six-year extension with the Ducks. The new deal will pay Lanning an average of $11 million per year, making his salary competitive with the very top level of coaches, and will run through 2030.
Lanning, who at 38 is one of the youngest head coaches in the power conferences, has spent the last three seasons at Oregon after winning a national championship as Georgia’s defensive coordinator in 2021. With the Ducks, Lanning has a 35-6 record.

In 2024, Oregon won the Big Ten in its first season as a member and entered the College Football Playoff as the No. 1 seed with a 13-0 record. However, the Ducks lost their CFP debut in the Rose Bowl to eventual national champion Ohio State.
How Dan Lanning’s contract stacks up to other top coaches
Lanning’s 2024 salary, which was $8.2 million, ranked 14th among FBS head coaches. Lanning’s deal, which is fully guaranteed, will make him one of seven coaches making more than $10 million in 2025.
His former boss, Kirby Smart, is the highest-paid coach in college football and made $13.2 million, according to USA TODAY Sports’ coaching salary database. Dabo Swinney was already making more than $11 million at Clemson, and Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian both received extensions, with the former now making more than $12 million after leading the Buckeyes to a national title.
