Paul Finebaum says Brent Venables is facing a critical season

Oklahoma Sooners fourth-year head coach Brent Venables is entering a make-or-break season in 2025. After a pair of 6-7 seasons with a 10-3 campaign in his second year, time may be running out on his time in Norman.

OU’s first season in the SEC was a disaster. A 2-6 mark in SEC play is way below the standard for this proud program. One ESPN college football analyst is concerned that Venables’ days at Oklahoma may be numbered.

SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum expressed these concerns on “The Paul Finebaum Show” earlier this week. He believes it’s a critical season for OU’s head coach.

“I think this season is absolutely critical,” Finebaum said. “I don’t think that’s a revelation. But I don’t think there can be any middle ground. He has now completely rebooted, and you have to nail these coordinator hires.”

Venables is replacing his offensive and defensive coordinators for the second straight season. Ben Arbuckle was hired to fix an offense that was broken in 2024 under the leadership of Seth Littrell. Defensively, Venables himself will take over the play-calling after Zac Alley decided to leave the program for West Virginia.

Finebaum also expressed that he believes Venables has very little wiggle room and that the transfer portal addition of quarterback John Mateer along with Arbuckle will be a good thing for the offense.

It’s a critical season in Norman, for Venables, his coaching staff, and the entire program. Oklahoma starts spring football on Thursday as the 2025 team begins to take shape.
