Vanderbilt football, Clark Lea, promotes three assistant coaches

Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea has promoted three assistant coaches going into the 2025 season, the school announced Wednesday.

Alex Bailey has been promoted from wide receivers coach to passing game coordinator, Larry Black has been promoted from defensive line coach to defensive run game coordinator and Jimmy Thompson has added the nickelbacks to his responsibility.

Bailey is heading into his fourth season at Vanderbilt. He helped guide Quincy Skinner Jr. and Junior Sherrill to tie for the team lead in receptions in 2024. Bailey will still work primarily with the receivers in 2025. He has previously coached at Colorado State, Ball State among others.

Black is also entering his fourth season with the Commodores. His defensive line improved from 104th to 52nd nationally in rushing defense in 2024 and helped Khordae Sydnor lead the team in tackles for loss last season. Black has coached at Toledo and was a graduate assistant on Notre Dame’s defensive staff, coordinated by Lea, which helped the Irish reach the College Football Playoff in 2018.

Thompson joined the Commodores’ staff when Lea took the head coaching job before the 2021 season. He also played two seasons under Lea at Notre Dame. Last season, Thompson worked with a hybrid linebacker/safety position the program calls the “Stars.” Randon Fontenette was third on the team with 73 tackles last season under Thompson’s direction.
