Ryan Grubb could have given a one-word answer if he wanted to.
The new Alabama football offensive coordinator was given a simple prompt: “How would you describe yourself as a play caller?”
“Aggressive,” Grubb said, taking a beat. “We’re going to be aggressive.”
Grubb knows what an aggressive offense looks like when it’s at its best. It’s an offense that is responsible with the football, consistently moving forward, matriculating down the field and calculating the right opportunity to “take the shot.”
Germie Bernard knew exactly what Grubb meant, standing behind a mass of reporters listening to the incoming Crimson Tide play caller describe an offense the second-year Alabama wide receiver has already been a part of.
While listening to Grubb speak, Bernard was putting the pieces together.
“Just to be able to have that system back, and especially with the guys that we have,” Bernard said, “I know that we’ll be able to recreate some good things.”

So what did the Grubb offense look like with Bernard at Washington?
“Explosive,” Bernard said.
It was an offense with a quarterback — Michael Penix Jr. — who led the Pac-12 in pass attempts, passing yards, passing yards per game and interceptions, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy race to LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels and winning the Maxwell Award.
It was an offense with two 1,000-yard receivers, with Rome Odunze, the All-American who led the conference in catches and receiving yards, and Ja’lynn Polk, with Dillon Johnson, the 1,100-yard rusher who led the Pac-12 in rushing touchdowns.
