LSU football ranked near the top in USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg’s SEC power rankings ahead of the start of spring practices.
Myerberg slotted the Tigers at third behind Texas and Georgia, ranking No. 1 and 2, respectively. Tennessee and Alabama round out the top five.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s announcement to return for a second year as the starter along with crucial portal pickups on both sides of the ball give Myerberg reason to feel optimistic about LSU’s chances to compete for the SEC crown.
The Tigers secured the top transfer portal class in the 2025 cycle, highlighted by multiple four-star pass catchers and edge rushers. Both positions were decimated by transfers and departures for the NFL. Such contributors like Kyren Lacy and Mason Taylor along with Brayden Swinson and Sa’vion Jones left large shoes to fill.
The biggest question remains on defense as LSU continues to implement coordinator Blake Barker’s strategies with a slew of newcomers. Whether or not the Tigers can make major improvements from last season will determine the amount of success they have.
“What LSU needs is a big step up on defense, and there’s reason to think that’s a possibility given another offseason to get comfortable in coordinator Blake Barker’s system,” Myerberg said.
