‘I’m locked in at Mosley’: Tommy Joe Whiddon not interested in Niceville football vacancy

Niceville head football coach Grant Thompson stepped down from his position in a shocking move Wednesday afternoon. Thompson had been with the Eagles for six years, leading the team to a 64-10 record and was a foot short of a Class 5A state championship appearance.

With the resignation just two months before spring ball, many, myself included, wondered whether Mosley football head coach Tommy Joe Whiddon would be approached or would consider throwing his hat in the ring for the position. It would be a natural fit, as Whiddon, a 2003 Niceville graduate, played quarterback with Thompson as his center.

Whiddon joined the Eagles’ coaching staff in 2013 as a quarterbacks coach and later on as an offensive coordinator. So it’s no secret that the ties are already there, not to mention also being the son-in-law to legendary Niceville coach John Hicks, who Thompson succeeded in 2019.

The News Herald contacted Whiddon about the Niceville vacancy and got a response Thursday.

“Nobody has reached out to me. I’m locked in at Mosley,” Whiddon said.

This isn’t the first time Whiddon’s name has been connected to other jobs. Whiddon has been in high demand, having turned down the head football coach position at Tallahassee powerhouse Lincoln late last year.

As it sits, Whiddon is set to return for his fifth season leading the Dolphins, who will travel to South Walton on Aug. 15 for the Kickoff Classic and open up the season on Aug. 22 vs. Rutherford.
