Monday afternoon, there will be formal college football in Nippert Stadium again as the University of Cincinnati Bearcats start their third season of spring work under head coach Scott Satterfield.
The Bearcats are coming off their first two seasons in the Big 12 with records of 3-9 and 5-7. Last fall’s record particularly hurt as they had a 5-2 start then went 0-for-5 in trying to qualify for a bowl game.
Big 12 precedent says there’s hope
Before the Bearcats entered the Big 12, TCU had a 5-7 run in 2021, then went 13-2 in 2022, making the national championship game. West Virginia went from 5-7 in 2022 and was picked dead last for 2023, but finished 9-4. BYU was 5-7 in 2023 and finished 11-2 last season.
Most recently, Arizona State came off of a 3-9 Pac-12 season in 2023 to be chosen last in the preseason of 2024 in the Big 12. The Sun Devils finished 11-3 and took Texas to double overtime in the Fiesta Bowl, losing 39-31. One of Arizona State’s defeats came right here at Nippert Stadium when UC downed the Sun Devils 24-14 for Homecoming.
Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Scott Satterfield and quarterback Brendan Sorsby are back at Nippert Stadium this month and next for 15 spring practices.
Is UC better than last year?
On paper, Scott Satterfield says so and his staff is anxious to get their 15 new transfer portal additions and 13 high school recruits on Nippert Stadium turf with a ball for a look-see. They’ve undergone another grueling winter of physical and mental conditioning from Director of Football Performance Niko Palazeti. But, other than toughness, teams aren’t graded on rope tugging and wind sprints through snow.
Thursday, four key Cincinnati Bearcats veterans addressed the upcoming spring and the latest push to return to bowl eligibility in the Big 12.
