What are Alabama football defense’s biggest questions heading into 2025?

Kane Wommack has quite a few things he’s excited about on the Alabama football defense.

The Crimson Tide defensive coordinator is excited for the returners, the veterans that chose to come back for another season in his scheme. He’s excited for the Bandit position, seeing ample potential in players like LT Overton, Kelby Collins, Jordan Renaud and company. He’s excited for Dijon Lee, Cameron Calhoun and Justin Hill.

But Wommack was honest with what he called “one of our biggest areas of depth concern:” the interior of the defensive line.

“I don’t know if I ever feel like I have enough depth on the interior,” Wommack said. “… Development is the best recipe for that. We’ll make sure we address those needs in any way we need to before the season.”

Wommack said he saw strides from the inside against Michigan in James Smith, who is one of a handful of players on the Crimson Tide’s injury report this spring, along with Edric Hill and Jeremiah Beaman. Collins, Wommack said, is cross training at both Bandit and on the interior, “which is a lot to ask for a guy coming in new.”

But behind Smith and returning starter Tim Keenan III, Alabama does not have much proven depth at defensive tackle.

“We’re going to have to ask some of those younger players to step up in a major role this year,” Wommack said. “So it’s going to be a tough challenge for them.”

What’s next for Alabama football at Husky?

Alabama’s Husky position is also a point of conversation, and one Wommack has a few answers in.

After losing DeVonta Smith to the transfer portal, Wommack first mentioned DaShawn Jones who he said has “been out a little bit” with an injury. Wommack also complimented Dre Kirkpatrick.

But at the nickel, Wommack sees an opportunity, something the Crimson Tide didn’t have when it desperately needed it a season ago.
