Where Garrett Nussmeier ranks in CBS Sports QB Power Rankings

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier ranked top 10 in a college football power rankings list released by CBS Sports earlier this week.

Texas’ Arch Manning is atop the list and is the lone SEC quarterback ahead of Nussmeier. Fornelli raved about the Nussmeier’s arm strength yet criticized his risk taking.

With the level of pass catchers Nussmeier had access to last season in Kyren Lacy and Mason Taylor, Nussmeier could take some chances. However, he sometimes got carried away trying to squeeze throws into tight windows and taking deep shots.

Before Nussmeier can gamble with his throws, he needs to establish chemistry with a largely new group of pass catchers. Trey’Dez Green returns following a breakout performance in the Texas Bowl, along with Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson. As part of its top ranked transfer class, LSU secured commitments from a pair of four-stars in Oklahoma’s Nic Anderson and Kentucky’s Barion Brown.

LSU has a history of quarterbacks making history as fifth-year players. Nussmeier and the Tigers offense can do the same if the receiving threats live up to the hype. The fifth year gunslinger is close to breaking the all-time passing yards record and is certainly aiming to not only increase his NFL Draft stock but also make a postseason run.
