OU football spring takeaways: Cornerback Eli Bowen on crutches at Sooners’ practice

NORMAN — OU freshman standout Eli Bowen was in crutches on the sideline during the Sooners’ third practice of spring camp on Monday.

Bowen wore a boot on his left leg. He played in 10 games and started each of the last seven games at corner in 2024 for OU, totaling 26 tackles (20 solo), two tackles for loss, one interception and four pass breakups.

Before Bowen’s injury, the Sooners’ depth was already slim at cornerback. Gentry Williams has been limited in practice after the season-ending injury he suffered last season. Peyton Bowen and Kendel Dolby have also been limited in the secondary.

Eli Bowen’s injury opens the door for players like Jaydan Hardy, Devon Jordan and Jeremiah Newcombe to receive more reps this spring.

Wide receiver Deion Burks was in a boot to start practice but later participated in drills with the first team offense.

Newly hired offensive analyst Kevin Wilson has been working with the offensive line alongside Bill Bedenbaugh.

Oklahoma State transfer Kendal Daniels was working at inside linebacker during Monday’s practice. He played linebacker and safety for the Cowboys.

Former OU players Ethan Downs, Dez Malone, Danny Stutsman, Michael Tarquin, Woodi Washington and Caiden Woullard were all at the Sooners’ practice on Monday. OU’s Pro Day is on Tuesday.

During a couple of drills, the first team offense consisted of quarterback John Mateer, running back Sam Franklin, receivers Manny Choice, Javonnie Gibson, Isaiah Sategna and tight end John Locke Jr.. The starting offensive line was: Luke Baklenko, Troy Everett, Febechi Nwaiwu, Eddy Pierre-Louis and Jacob Sexton.
