Another former Alabama football player is joining Scott Cochran’s West Alabama football staff.
O.J. Howard, the former Crimson Tide tight end who was a five-star recruit and won three SEC championships and a national championship in his four seasons at Alabama, was named as West Alabama’s director of player development.
“We’re thrilled to welcome another Alabama Football legend and NFL Champion, O.J. Howard,” Cochran said in a statement. “O.J. was an outstanding athlete at Alabama, earning a first-round NFL draft selection, but what truly set him apart was his leadership. He is a leader of men, and that’s exactly why he’s the perfect fit for this role.”

After recording 1,726 yards receiving and seven touchdowns in four years at Alabama, Howard was a first-round NFL draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finished with 119 catches for 1,737 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was a Super Bowl champion in 2021 with the Buccaneers.
Howard joins former Alabama quarterback Blake Sims (wide receivers coach), former Crimson Tide defensive back and running back Ronnie Clark (running backs coach) and former Alabama long snapper Scott Fletcher (special teams coordinator) on Cochran’s first staff.
Howard will join the team April 1.
West Alabama will open the 2025 season against Fort Valley State in Birmingham.
