When UCF coach Scott Frost stepped on the grassy fields of Wayne Densch Practice Complex on Tuesday for the first day of spring camp, it seemed as if nothing had changed.
The sun shone brighter, the grass seemed greener and the air was unseasonably colder. At the start of the 90-minute session, temperatures were in the 50s.
Frost was back home, leading the Knights into a new season for the first time in eight years.
There were black construction barriers snaking through the Kenneth G. Dixon Athletics Village, which indicated ongoing multi-million dollar projects at FBC Mortgage Stadium and the new Hagle Gateway.
“It’s good to be on that practice field again,” Frost said afterward. “There was such a good energy out there; the weather was beautiful with the palm trees and ospreys flying around and a bunch of kids who love football. It’s a fun place to be.”
Tuesday’s practice felt like a fresh start for Frost and most of the 105 players who participated in the organized drills. The atmosphere buzzed with 40 newcomers who were recruited from high schools or brought in through the transfer portal.
Frost’s message on Day 1 was simple.
“If they keep giving us effort, we’ll get there,” he said. “The number one thing I told them is they just bring the enthusiasm and the effort. We can fix the technique and the little things on the field. That’s our job as coaches. But you can’t fix effort.”
While Frost was pleased with what he saw, he admitted there is plenty to clean up during the next five weeks. Nothing is guaranteed.
“I told the guys yesterday in a team meeting that nobody has a spot right now. They all have got to go out and earn them honestly,” he said. “I don’t think most spots will be obvious and secured until after fall camp, especially with guys just learning the offense.”
